Traditional liposuction can be used on a wide range of body regions. Small incisisons are made in easy to conceal areas and a special fluid is injected into the fatty tissue to minimize pain and bleeding. A tube called a cannula is then used to physically break up fatty tissue and remove it via suction. The amount of time needed to perform the perform the procedure is dependent on how much fat needs to be removed.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You’ll be provided a set of pre-operative instructions describing how you should prepare for the liposuction procedure. This will cover things like activities, foods and medications to avoid prior to surgery. It’s important that you familiarize yourself with and follow those instructions. It’s also important to arrange for a responsible adult to be available to take you home after the surgery and assist you for at least the first 24 hours.
Day of Surgery
You’ll meet with Dr. Griner and the anesthesiologist prior to surgery. This is a good chance for any last minute questions. The actual length of the surgery varies for each patient depending on how much fat needs to be removed. Dr. Griner will discuss this with you and answer any other questions prior to the day of surgery. Afterwards you’ll be moved into your recovery room which will typically last 1 to 1 1/2 hours before you’ll be discharged.
In most cases patients are able to return home the same day. Because swelling and tenderness is normal you’ll be provided prescription medication to help manage your pain. Depending on your individual situation it’s recommended not to resume regular activity for at least approximately seven days. You’ll be provided more detailed instructions from Dr. Griner on you specific instructions for post surgery recovery.
